Bangladesh Measles Death Toll Tops 1,030 as Eight More Children Die
(MENAFN) Bangladesh's measles crisis deepened Monday, with authorities confirming eight additional child deaths tied to measles and measles-like symptoms, pushing the nationwide toll to 1,030.
Four of Monday's fatalities occurred in the capital, Dhaka, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), which operates under the Health Ministry. The Dhaka division alone now accounts for 482 deaths since the outbreak began.
The broader case count continues to climb as well: symptomatic cases have reached 172,720, while laboratory-confirmed infections stand at 20,124.
The outbreak has proven difficult to contain in the densely populated nation of 175 million, a challenge the World Health Organization (WHO) attributes largely to low vaccination coverage. The WHO notes that Bangladesh once maintained herd immunity against measles but has lost that protection in recent years as vaccination rates slipped.
In response, the Health Ministry has ramped up immunization efforts, vaccinating close to 19.48 million children since April through a dedicated special campaign that runs alongside the country's routine vaccination schedule.
