Mount Semeru Blasts Ash 1,000m Skyward in Triple Eruption
(MENAFN) Indonesia's Mount Semeru erupted three separate times early Monday, hurling volcanic ash as high as 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above its summit, according to the country's disaster management agency.
The volcano sits on the border of Lumajang and Malang regencies in East Java province.
The three ash columns reached heights of approximately 500 meters, 800 meters and 1,000 meters above the summit, respectively, Berton Panjaitan, a spokesperson for Indonesia's National Disaster Mitigation Agency, told Anadolu.
Semeru — the tallest peak on Java island at 3,676 meters (12,060 feet) — remains under a Level III alert, the second-highest tier in Indonesia's four-level volcanic warning system.
It is currently one of five volcanoes nationwide holding Level III status, as authorities keep close watch on volcanic activity across the archipelago.
Mount Semeru is located in East Java, in the western portion of the Indonesian archipelago.
Indonesia, a sprawling nation of more than 17,000 islands, straddles the seismically volatile Pacific "Ring of Fire" and is home to more than 120 active volcanoes.
Semeru ranks among the country's most active volcanoes, having recorded frequent eruptions in recent years.
