Houthis Claim Massive Missile-Drone Strike on Saudi Air Base

(MENAFN) Yemen's Houthis claimed Monday to have launched a large-scale missile and drone assault on a Saudi air base in the southern city of Khamis Mushait.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement that the group struck King Khalid Air Base with dozens of ballistic missiles and drones.

He claimed the strikes hit aircraft hangars, radars, runways, ammunition depots and other military facilities, inflicting "significant losses" on the base.

The Houthis said the operation was retaliation for Saudi airstrikes in Yemen, alleging that Saudi F-15 and Typhoon fighter jets had carried out more than 300 strikes across several Yemeni provinces over the previous five days.

Saudi Arabia had not immediately confirmed the Houthi claims regarding damage at the base.

Saudi Arabia's Civil Defense issued an alert for Khamis Mushait governorate but later said "the danger has passed." It urged residents to keep following Civil Defense instructions and to avoid gathering and filming.

The Houthis vowed to continue their attacks inside Saudi Arabia for as long as Saudi military operations in Yemen persist, warning that any further strikes would be met with "broader and more severe" operations.

The escalation marks a sharp intensification of hostilities between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis, with both sides trading attacks in recent days.

Saudi Arabia has stepped up airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen, while the Houthis have launched missile and drone strikes targeting southern Saudi cities and energy facilities.

Last week, Saudi authorities said 73 civilians were injured in Houthi attacks on Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran, with the strikes also sparking fires and causing temporary disruptions at energy facilities in the kingdom.

The Houthis seized Yemen's capital, Sanaa, in 2014 and have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition for more than a decade.
