Gaza Rescue Teams Pull 17 More Bodies From Ruins
(MENAFN) Gaza's civil defense announced Sunday it had recovered the bodies and remains of 17 Palestinians who had lain missing beneath the wreckage of homes flattened in Israeli attacks during the enclave's genocide.
The recoveries mark the latest advance in the second phase of the "Recovery of Martyrs' Bodies" project, an effort launched July 19 to locate Palestinians trapped under collapsed buildings — work rescue crews are carrying out despite a severe shortage of heavy machinery.
This phase focuses on excavations beneath destroyed homes in Gaza City to the north and the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza.
In a brief statement, civil defense officials said crews pulled 16 bodies from the ruins of homes belonging to the Hajji and Al-Nadeem families in Gaza City's Zeitoun and Yarmouk neighborhoods.
A 17th body was recovered from a destroyed home owned by the Al-War family in the Nuseirat refugee camp, the statement added.
Progress remains slow, hampered by a lack of heavy equipment — even though the Gaza ceasefire agreement, in force since October 10, 2025, is meant to allow machinery into the territory to clear rubble and retrieve victims, according to Palestinian officials.
Gaza's government media office reported in October 2025 that roughly 9,500 Palestinians remained unaccounted for since the war began, a figure that includes both those believed buried under ruined structures and others whose fate is still unknown.
The current phase is expected to run 800 working hours and cover searches beneath 147 destroyed homes across Gaza, North Gaza and the Central governorates, where civil defense estimates put the number of bodies still buried at 1,072.
The project's first phase, which began in late November 2025, recovered approximately 333 bodies and human remains out of 559 people believed missing beneath the wreckage of 54 homes and buildings.
Israel's genocide in Gaza has now killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and wounded over 174,000 others, alongside massive destruction of civilian infrastructure.
