Israel Fast-Tracks 153 West Bank Settlement Plans in 2026
(MENAFN) Israel has pushed forward 153 separate plans for settlements in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since January 2026, paving the way for more than 18,000 new housing units, according to a Palestinian monitoring body.
The Palestinian Colonization and Wall Resistance Commission said Sunday its tracking revealed a "high level of planning activity aimed at expanding settlements."
Between January 1 and September 13, Israeli authorities greenlit 100 of those plans across the broader West Bank, accounting for roughly 12,300 housing units, the commission reported.
A further 53 plans fall within East Jerusalem's Israeli-drawn municipal boundaries, targeting 5,783 additional units, it said.
September alone saw a fresh burst of activity: 12 new plans covering 2,340 housing units spread across 1,761 dunams of land, according to the commission's figures.
The findings build on an earlier commission report, which documented 524 structural plans for settlements considered by Israeli planning bodies between October 7, 2023, and June 30, 2026.
Settlement expansion has surged under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose government has approved 104 new settlements since returning to power in late 2022.
Israel has controlled the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since 1967. Settlements built on this occupied Palestinian territory are regarded as illegal under international law.
