Nadella: AI Must Stay Under Human Control
(MENAFN) Advanced artificial intelligence systems must remain firmly under human oversight, with developers moving deliberately to ensure safe deployment, Microsoft Chairman and CEO Satya Nadella said Sunday.
"Any pursuit of superintelligence has to be grounded in the core principle that if the AI we build is not helping humanity and under human control, it's not worth pursuing," Nadella wrote on X.
Nadella voiced support for "deliberate pacing needed to get alignment right," alongside proposals for "embedded evaluators" to monitor AI systems from within laboratories, and urged industry players to translate safety principles into concrete operational practices.
He warned that governance of AI "cannot be controlled by a handful of entities, but must have broad representation across the ecosystem, countries, and fields, including academia." He added that a healthy frontier ecosystem depends on "both closed and open-source models" to thrive.
The Microsoft chief also argued that businesses must retain control over their "unique and tacit knowledge," saying organizations should build continuous learning architectures that let them manage their own model weights without becoming dependent on any single AI developer.
Nadella announced that Microsoft will publish a code of conduct Monday for public consultation, governing its first-party Microsoft AI (MAI) models.
The comments arrive amid mounting industry debate over AI safety protocols, following a proposal from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei to embed independent reviewers inside AI laboratories — an approach OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has signaled his company will also adopt.
