Yemeni Forces Retake Ground in Taiz
(MENAFN) Yemeni government forces reclaimed territory from the Houthi group and pushed into new areas of southwestern Taiz province on Sunday, backed by airstrikes targeting Houthi gatherings and reinforcements across the region, a state-run news agency reported.
A military source with the Taiz Military Axis told Saba that government troops recaptured high ground overlooking the Jardad area in Al-Shamayatayn district after Houthi fighters had infiltrated the positions. Forces then pressed forward toward Ghayl Bani Omar as part of an ongoing campaign to push the Houthis out of Taiz province, the source said.
Ghayl Bani Omar, a rural area functioning as a front line between the two sides, saw government troops seize military equipment and inflict casualties on Houthi fighters during the clashes, though no specific toll was provided, according to the source.
Warplanes simultaneously struck Houthi positions, gatherings and vehicles across multiple parts of Taiz, the source said. Strikes hit Houthi vehicles and troop concentrations in the Dhubab, Al-Waziiyah and Hayfan districts.
A separate strike targeted a Houthi gathering in the Al-Afirah area of Jabal Habashi district, destroying several military vehicles and triggering the explosion of a medium-caliber ammunition stockpile, the report said. The military source said at least 10 Houthi fighters were killed in that strike. The Houthi group had not issued an immediate response to the report.
Yemen's territorial balance has shifted markedly in recent days. The Houthis have announced control over several districts in Al Hudaydah and Taiz along the western coast, along with Red Sea islands including Perim Island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
Yemeni government forces, for their part, have reported advances in Al-Jawf province along the Saudi border, saying they are nearing the provincial capital, Al-Hazm. They have also reported airstrikes on Houthi targets in Mocha and surrounding areas, as well as in Taiz, Lahj and Al-Dhalea provinces, claiming to have destroyed military vehicles and weapons — and said they repelled a major Houthi assault on Marib.
Fighting between government forces and the Houthis has intensified sharply since early July 2026, following years of relative calm.
Yemen has remained engulfed in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and several provinces in September 2014, a takeover that prompted a Saudi-led Arab coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government.
