Yemen's Al-Alimi Vows to Restore State Amid Shifting Front Lines
(MENAFN) Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council Chairman Rashad al-Alimi pledged Sunday to press ahead with efforts to rebuild state institutions and extend government authority nationwide, as rapidly shifting battle lines reshape the conflict with the Houthi movement.
Al-Alimi delivered the pledge during a series of phone calls with several Presidential Leadership Council members, Prime Minister Shaya al-Zindani, the commander of the Fourth Military Region, provincial governors and military commanders, reviewing the latest field, security, humanitarian and public service developments.
"The course of major national battles is not determined by a temporary change on one front line," al-Alimi said, stressing that setbacks on the battlefield will not diminish the capacity of the Yemeni people and armed forces to rebuild state institutions.
He said the outcome of the broader struggle will instead hinge on "strength of will, unity of purpose and decision-making, and the ability to learn from challenges and turn them into opportunities to build greater strength and cohesion and regain the initiative."
The chairman added that the state's strength rests on the "integration of its military, security, political, economic and service fronts."
Yemen's territorial balance has shifted sharply in recent days. The Houthis have announced control over several districts in Al Hudaydah and Taiz along the western coast, along with Red Sea islands including Perim Island in the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Yemeni government forces, meanwhile, have reported advances in Al-Jawf province along the Saudi border, saying they are closing in on the provincial capital, Al-Hazm.
Government forces also reported carrying out airstrikes on Houthi positions in Mokha and nearby areas, as well as targets in Taiz, Lahj and Al-Dhalea provinces, claiming to have destroyed military vehicles and weapons. They additionally said they repelled a major Houthi assault on Marib.
Fighting between government forces and the Houthis has escalated sharply since early July, following years of relative calm.
Yemen has remained locked in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and several provinces in September 2014 — a takeover that prompted a Saudi-led Arab coalition to intervene in March 2015 in support of the internationally recognized government.
