Bangsamoro Region Holds Historic First Parliamentary Vote

(MENAFN) Ballots opened Monday across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in the southern Philippines, marking the Muslim-majority territory's first-ever parliamentary election and a milestone years in the making.

Voting stations opened at 7 a.m. local time (2300 GMT Sunday) and are scheduled to close at 7 p.m. (1100 GMT Monday), according to a news agency. Initial results are expected to emerge later Monday evening.

Roughly 700 candidates representing 13 regional parties are competing for 80 seats in the newly formed Bangsamoro parliament, the region's top legislative body. The chamber will be filled through three tracks: 40 party-list representatives, 32 district representatives, and eight seats reserved for sectoral groups.

Election officials will rely on automated vote-counting machines, the same systems used during the Philippines' nationwide midterm elections in May 2025.

Nearly 2.4 million registered voters are eligible to participate in a contest widely regarded as a defining test of the region's path toward self-rule and durable peace, following decades of armed conflict between government forces and separatist movements.

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is home to approximately 5 million residents, most of them Muslim, spanning five provinces, three cities, and 63 villages organized into eight special geographic clusters.

The region's political foundation traces back to January 2019, when voters approved the Bangsamoro Organic Law in a referendum. That vote cleared the way for the creation of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, tasked with governing the area after years of struggle led by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front under Murad Ebrahim.

Monday's election had originally been slated for 2022 but was postponed four separate times before finally proceeding.
