German Lawmaker Warns Europe Faces Growing Russian Security Threat

(MENAFN) German lawmaker Robin Wagener said Sunday that he narrowly avoided a Russian drone attack while traveling by train along the same railway route near the Polish border, describing the incident as a reminder of the growing security risks facing Europe.

Wagener said he had recently returned from Kyiv, where he witnessed heavier air defense activity and more frequent drone attacks than during his previous visits. He later traveled by train along the route that was targeted in the reported strike.

“And this morning I traveled by train on the same route where this attack happened,” he wrote, sharing footage of the incident. “Sometimes chance decides whether you get through safely — after Russian terrorists have already decided on the attack.”

The German parliamentarian warned that Moscow's military actions should be treated as a serious threat across Europe and criticized what he described as insufficient recognition of the danger.

“Russia is an immense danger to Europe’s security. Too many of us have still not realized that,” Wagener wrote. “Our support for Ukraine in defending against it is still too hesitant.”

Wagener is a member of the German parliament's Foreign Affairs and European Affairs Committees and serves as the Green parliamentary group's spokesperson for Eastern Europe. He also heads the German-Ukrainian parliamentary friendship group.

A separate diplomatic train traveling from Kyiv toward Poland was also reportedly affected by the drone threat earlier Sunday. Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and other European officials were aboard, including Guenter Sautter, a senior adviser to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

Parts of the train were evacuated after drone strikes were reported in the surrounding area, according to reports.
