Ukraine Alleges Russian Strike Targets Diplomatic Train Near Poland
(MENAFN) Ukraine says a Russian drone may have been intended to strike a diplomatic train carrying former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and several European officials near the border with Poland.
The incident occurred when a Russian strike hit the locomotive of a passenger train close to the Ukraine-Poland border, shortly before the diplomatic train was scheduled to reach Yahodyn station, according to reports.
Several European security advisers and former leaders were traveling aboard the diplomatic train, including Johnson. Former CIA Director David Petraeus was also at Yahodyn station at the time, traveling on a separate train.
Ukrainian railway authorities said a dispatcher detected the jet-powered drone as it approached the locomotive, prompting officials to issue an evacuation warning around 15 minutes before the strike took place.
“It is highly likely that the Russian drone’s intended target was actually the diplomatic train, which had departed the station earlier than scheduled due to real-time schedule adjustments made in response to the constant threat of Russian strikes,” the operator said.
The railway operator accused Moscow of continuing to carry out attacks against civilian rail infrastructure and trains. Russia has not publicly responded to the latest Ukrainian allegation.
