Johnson Calls for More Air Defenses, Frozen Russian Funds for Ukraine
(MENAFN) Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has urged Western countries to increase air defense assistance to Ukraine and release frozen Russian assets after he was evacuated from a train following a reported Russian drone strike near the Polish border.
Johnson said the incident occurred while he was traveling on a privately chartered train from Kyiv toward Poland alongside European officials. The train was evacuated after a nearby drone attack, according to reports.
"I don’t know what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border this morning," Johnson wrote on X.
He described the reported strike as "kind of random and senseless," adding that Ukrainians "are enduring every day, even on civilian railways."
The former prime minister used the incident to renew his call for stronger protection of Ukraine's airspace, questioning why additional defensive systems have not been provided.
"When are we going to give them the air defences they need? Why won’t we unfreeze Putin’s cash and give it to Ukraine," Johnson said, pointing to more than €140 billion ($162 billion) reportedly held in a Belgian bank account and around £10 billion ($13.5 billion) in London.
Johnson also expressed confidence in Ukraine's ability to prevail in the conflict, citing what he witnessed during his recent visit.
He said: "The Ukrainians are going to win - that much was clear from the last three days in their wonderful country."
