Historic Mosque in Greece Gets Targeted by Offensive Graffiti
(MENAFN) Offensive messages targeting religious beliefs have been found on an exterior wall near the entrance of the historic Cinar Mosque in Xanthi, Western Thrace, Greece, prompting condemnation from representatives of the region’s Muslim community.
The writings were discovered on Sept. 13, according to a statement from a local Turkish minority council.
The council described the messages as "offensive expressions incompatible with humanity, morality and the respect that should be shown to places of worship."
"Any attack or disrespect targeting places of worship, sacred sites and religious beliefs is unacceptable," the statement said, strongly denouncing the incident on behalf of the Western Thrace Turkish Minority and the broader Muslim community.
The council called for those responsible to be identified and arrested as quickly as possible. It also urged that the perpetrators be brought before the courts and face appropriate legal consequences.
The incident has raised concerns over respect for religious sites and the protection of places of worship from acts of vandalism and hostility.
