Leftover War Ammunition Injures Child in Aleppo Blast
(MENAFN) A child was injured Sunday when an explosion struck the Al-Suryan neighborhood of Aleppo in northern Syria, with the blast attributed to ammunition left behind from the former government of Bashar al-Assad.
The explosion was heard near Al-Rahman Mosque and was reportedly caused by unexploded ordnance remaining from the previous regime.
Authorities had not immediately released further information regarding the child’s condition or whether the blast caused significant property damage.
Incidents involving remnants of war continue to occur across Syria, with authorities periodically reporting fatalities and injuries caused by explosives and ammunition left behind during the conflict that followed the country’s 2011 uprising.
The fighting between Assad’s forces and opposition groups continued for years before his rule came to an end. Assad, who had governed Syria for nearly 25 years, fled to Russia on Dec. 8, 2024, bringing the Baath Party’s decades-long rule, which began in 1963, to an end.
A transitional administration headed by President Ahmad al-Sharaa was subsequently established in January 2025.
