Yemen Fighting Drives Tens of Thousands from Western Coast
(MENAFN) More than 82,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Yemen’s western coastal provinces since the start of September as fighting continues, with thousands seeking safety across the Red Sea in Djibouti.
The latest displacement figure stands at 82,164 people, according to the UN migration agency, which said the movements have been recorded in the provinces of Taiz, Al Hudaydah and Lahj amid continued hostilities.
“Over 2,000 people fleeing the hostilities have reached Djibouti's northern shores so far, landing at scattered points along the coast near Obock,” it added.
Djibouti has also received a significant number of Yemeni arrivals in a short period. Earlier Sunday, the country’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia said roughly 1,400 Yemenis had entered Djibouti during the previous 24 hours as violence intensified along Yemen’s western coastline.
“Djiboutian authorities are leading the response, mobilizing the Navy, army, police and health services, with support from IOM and UN partners,” the UN agency said.
Many of those arriving in Djibouti are women and children. They have been relocated to the Markazi site in Obock, where humanitarian teams are providing essential assistance, including drinking water, high-energy biscuits and hot meals.
