Bulgaria Moves to Strengthen Security at High-Risk Sites

(MENAFN) Bulgaria is preparing to reinforce security arrangements at strategic facilities and locations considered potentially hazardous following a series of explosions at ammunition storage sites.

Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said Sunday that government officials will meet with Prime Minister Rumen Radev next week to determine and formalize specific security measures.

The planned action follows blasts at two ammunition depots, with investigators examining the circumstances surrounding both incidents and determining whether they may be connected.

Demerdzhiev said authorities are considering every possible explanation and are comparing the two explosions that occurred in the Gabrovo region within the past month.

He said additional preventive measures would be introduced to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents occurring in the future.

Addressing comparable incidents recorded in Bulgaria in recent years, the minister noted that other countries have also encountered challenges when attempting to determine the causes behind such events.

Demerdzhiev also said investigators are expected to release expert assessments and evidence collected so far in the Petrohan case, where six people died, on Monday.

Two separate investigations are being conducted into that incident. One is focused on the deaths, while the other is examining financial issues, including transactions involving the accounts of the association connected to the case, he said.
