Trump Predicts Iran War Ends Around US Midterm Elections
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump says he expects the conflict with Iran to conclude around the time of the US midterm elections, while claiming that Tehran is seeking an agreement to bring the fighting to an end.
Speaking to reporters in Ireland on Sunday during his visit to the Amgen Irish Open golf tournament at his Trump International Golf Links resort, Trump said the conflict could conclude before the midterm elections but would not necessarily last beyond them.
"Look, it could end before the midterms, but it'll end after the midterms," Trump said.
He also predicted a sharp decline in fuel prices once the fighting stops, saying gasoline costs would fall rapidly after hostilities come to an end.
US gasoline prices stood at an average of $4.31 per gallon on Sunday, compared with $4.07 a month earlier and $3.19 a year earlier, according to available industry data.
Trump claimed Iranian officials have been making repeated efforts to reach an agreement, but stressed that Washington would only accept terms it considers favorable.
He said Iranian representatives are "calling constantly" to secure a deal, while adding: "I'm not going to make a deal that's no good."
Iran has rejected Trump's characterization of the situation, describing his claims as "absurd" and accusing him of attempting to shift attention away from economic difficulties inside the United States that it says have been worsened by the conflict.
Trump also reiterated what he described as the central aim of the US military campaign, insisting that Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
"Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and they won't have a nuclear weapon."
