Kremlin Says Territorial Dispute Remains Central to Ukraine Settlement
(MENAFN) The territorial question continues to represent a major obstacle to resolving the conflict in Ukraine, according to Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov.
Ushakov said Sunday that the parties involved in the conflict maintain different positions regarding what they hope to achieve through future negotiations, making the territorial issue one of the most difficult matters still requiring attention.
“One of the main issues is the territorial one. That is true. There is undoubtedly a lot of work still to be done,” he said.
Ushakov was also asked whether the conflict in Ukraine had featured in discussions at the BRICS summit in New Delhi. He said the issue received little attention in the speeches delivered by participating leaders, with Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira being the only speaker he noticed addressing it.
“I noticed yesterday that during the leaders’ speeches at the summit, only one — the Brazilian foreign minister — mentioned Ukraine, while all the other leaders simply left it aside,” he said.
When questioned about whether this reflected a common BRICS position regarding the conflict, Ushakov said he viewed the limited discussion as an indication that member states understand Moscow’s perspective.
“In my view, this speaks of an understanding of our position. And what our president explained during his conversations with individual leaders is, of course, going into our asset column,” he said.
Ushakov added that Ukraine was also among the key subjects discussed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s bilateral meetings held on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in India.
