Bangsamoro Holds First Parliamentary Vote in Push for Self-Governance
(MENAFN) The Bangsamoro autonomous region in the southern Philippines is preparing to conduct its first parliamentary election on Monday, marking a major development in its long-running pursuit of self-rule and a durable political settlement following decades of conflict.
Around 2.4 million registered voters are expected to participate in the vote, which will determine the members of an 80-seat regional parliament. The legislature will include representatives from political parties, electoral districts and different sectors of society.
The election will feature 40 party representatives, 32 district representatives and eight sectoral representatives.
Polling stations are scheduled to operate from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. local time on Monday, with voting taking place across the autonomous region.
Authorities will rely on automated counting machines that were previously used during the Philippines’ midterm elections in May 2025 to process the ballots.
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao has a population of roughly 5 million, with Muslims forming the majority. Its territory encompasses five provinces, three cities and 63 villages grouped across eight special geographic areas.
The region’s current political structure emerged after a referendum in January 2019 endorsed the Bangsamoro Organic Law. The legislation formally created the Bangsamoro Transition Authority after decades of armed resistance led by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front under Murad Ebrahim.
The inaugural parliamentary election is therefore viewed as an important milestone in transferring political authority to elected representatives and advancing the region’s long-term peace and self-governance efforts.
