Zverev Claims First US Open Crown, Denies Shelton in Four Sets
(MENAFN) Alexander Zverev clinched his maiden US Open men's singles title Sunday, outlasting Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 to capture his second career Grand Slam.
The top-seeded German dominated the first two sets before Shelton clawed back to steal the third, briefly igniting comeback hopes inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. Zverev wrestled back momentum in the fourth, breaking serve early and then again to surge ahead 5-2 before closing out the match.
The triumph marks the 29-year-old's second major title overall, completing a French Open-US Open sweep after he claimed his breakthrough Grand Slam at Roland Garros in June. Zverev had also reached the Wimbledon final in July, making Sunday's win his third consecutive Grand Slam final appearance.
The victory carries added weight given his history at the tournament: Zverev lost the 2020 US Open final after blowing a two-set lead against Dominic Thiem. Six years on, he finally finished the job in New York to seize his first US Open title.
For Shelton, 23, the defeat capped a run to his first career Grand Slam final, where he had hoped to become the first American man to win a major singles crown since Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open. The eighth seed punched his ticket to the final by defeating fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals — a run that made him the first Black American man to reach the US Open men's singles final since Arthur Ashe in 1972.
