South Africa Urges BRICS to Create Independent AI Oversight
(MENAFN) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa calls on BRICS members to develop an international body capable of independently assessing the scientific and technological risks posed by artificial intelligence.
Addressing the BRICS summit in New Delhi on Sunday, Ramaphosa said the rapid development of AI requires stronger safeguards to ensure that technological progress does not outpace humanity’s ability to understand, manage and control increasingly advanced systems.
"The capabilities of artificial intelligence models are becoming increasingly more powerful and are rapidly reshaping almost every area of economic and social life," he said.
Ramaphosa acknowledged the potential of AI to drive major improvements in productivity and human development. If used "effectively and responsibly," he said, the technology could contribute to reducing inequality, poverty and underdevelopment while accelerating advances in healthcare, education, scientific research and agricultural output.
At the same time, he urged governments to take seriously the concerns raised by researchers and developers working on some of the world’s most advanced AI technologies.
Among the potential threats he highlighted were sophisticated cyber operations, support for the development of biological weapons, autonomous decision-making, manipulation, large-scale surveillance and significant disruption to employment.
He also warned of the possibility that future AI systems could become so capable that humans may struggle to maintain effective oversight or control over their behavior.
