Anwar Warns Muslims Risk 'Colonization' Without AI Mastery
(MENAFN) Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim called on Muslim scholars and communities worldwide to accelerate their engagement with artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, cautioning that falling behind carries the risk of susceptibility to outside domination.
"Without knowledge, we will fail. Without understanding artificial intelligence, we will be colonized," Anwar declared Sunday during an award ceremony in Kozhikode, in the southern Indian state of Kerala.
The remarks came as he accepted the inaugural Excellence Award, newly established by the Sheikh Abubakr Foundation, at a ceremony held at Markazu Saquafathi Sunniyya in Karanthur.
Anwar stressed that religious scholars must confront the "new realities and challenges of the present time," pointing specifically to modern technology, emerging scientific fields, digital transformation and AI as areas demanding attention.
Still, he cautioned that technological progress should never come at the cost of religious and ethical foundations.
"We need the knowledge. We need the expertise," he said, adding that Muslim societies bear responsibility for ensuring that technological growth safeguards their "faith and moral values."
The prime minister flagged a deeper concern: that emerging technologies could quietly import foreign values capable of eroding faith and ethical standards — a risk he said grows sharper when societies lack the knowledge base needed to understand and actively shape these tools themselves.
He further voiced unease that Muslim scholars and societies have not devoted sufficient attention to the challenges AI poses, noting this gap persists even as prominent figures within the technology industry increasingly debate the risks it presents.
Anwar urged deeper engagement with AI, paired with a commitment to keeping technological advancement anchored in knowledge, ethics and religious values.
The Excellence Award was presented to Anwar by Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar, India's Grand Mufti and a leading Sunni scholar.
The Malaysian leader's stop in Kerala followed his participation in the BRICS Leaders' Summit in New Delhi.
