Kushner Says US Leveraged Doha Strike Fallout to Push Gaza Deal
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump's envoy and son-in-law Jared Kushner revealed that Washington capitalized on international backlash against Israel's September 2025 airstrike in Doha, Qatar — which targeted Hamas leaders — to help steer the country toward a Gaza ceasefire and hostage-release agreement.
"Israel did the strike in Doha, which was a terrible thing," Kushner said. "It was unsuccessful as a military operation, and that led to Israel being globally isolated."
Kushner said the United States seized on that diplomatic fallout to advance a deal that had already been in the works for months. "And we used that dynamic in order to push them into a deal that now, today, they're quite happy with," he said.
The Sept. 9, 2025, airstrike hit a residential compound in Doha's Leqtaifiya district, targeting senior Hamas leaders who were meeting to discuss a US-backed ceasefire proposal for Gaza. The top leaders survived, rendering the operation a failed assassination attempt. Five Hamas members and aides were killed, including the son of senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya, along with a 22-year-old Qatari Internal Security Force officer.
Kushner acknowledged that Israeli officials initially balked at some of the steps Washington pressed them to take. "At the time, they were a little uncomfortable with kind of what we were pushing them to do," he said. Still, he argued the eventual outcome paid off for both sides. "But ultimately, it turned out to be great for them, and it turned out to be great for the people of Gaza," Kushner said.
