Israel's Katz Threatens to "Eliminate" Anyone Near Lebanon Ridge

(MENAFN) Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stark warning Sunday, vowing to "eliminate" anyone who approaches the Ali al-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon as the Israeli army prepares to seize control of the area.

Katz said Israeli forces had already killed Hezbollah fighters and destroyed tunnel networks at the site, and were now moving to block the group — or any other party — from reestablishing a foothold there. He described the ridge as part of what Israel refers to as the "yellow line," within a self-declared "security zone" inside Lebanon spanning roughly 700 square kilometers (270 square miles). Katz added that Israel would not withdraw or redeploy its forces until Hezbollah is disarmed throughout Lebanon.

Neither Lebanese authorities nor Hezbollah had responded to the remarks as of Sunday.

The threat follows a major Israeli military operation Thursday at the Ali al-Taher ridge, where the army said it detonated explosives to destroy a Hezbollah tunnel network and related infrastructure stretching more than two kilometers (1.24 miles). Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later called the site the "largest Iranian site outside Iran."

Strategically positioned north of the Litani River between Kfar Tibnit and Nabatieh al-Fawqa, the ridge commands sweeping views over much of southern Lebanon, underscoring its military value. Earlier this month, Netanyahu claimed Israeli forces had completed the "clearing" of the area.

Israeli strikes in Lebanon have killed nearly 4,400 people and wounded 12,500 more since March 2, according to official Lebanese figures. Israel continues to hold territory in southern Lebanon, including land occupied for decades alongside areas seized during more recent wars and military operations.
