UAE, Saudi, Iraq Talks Intensify Amid Pipeline Attack Fallout
(MENAFN) United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan held a series of calls Sunday with his Saudi and Iraqi counterparts aimed at heading off a broader regional conflict, as tensions across the Middle East continued to shift rapidly.
In a phone call with Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, the two officials reviewed the latest regional developments and discussed steps to contain the escalating situation, the Saudi Foreign Ministry said. Both sides underscored the need to coordinate positions and deepen Gulf cooperation to protect the security and interests of Gulf states.
Sheikh Abdullah also spoke separately with Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein, with the call touching on regional security, the ongoing situation in Yemen, and Iraq's relations with its Gulf neighbors, according to Iraq's Foreign Ministry. Both ministers stressed the importance of avoiding further escalation and resolving disputes through peaceful means and negotiation, with Hussein reaffirming Baghdad's commitment to regional stability and dialogue.
The flurry of diplomatic contacts comes amid rising regional tensions following drone strikes on Saudi Arabia's East-West oil pipeline — attacks Riyadh says were launched from Iraqi territory. Baghdad has said it is taking steps to prevent its territory from being used to threaten neighboring countries.
