Lee Jae Myung's Approval Sinks to Record Low
(MENAFN) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung's approval rating has plunged to the lowest point of his presidency, marking nine consecutive weeks of decline, a news agency reported Monday.
The latest Realmeter survey, which polled 2,515 adults, found just 33.8% of respondents view Lee's handling of state affairs favorably — a 3.6 percentage-point slide from the prior week. Disapproval, meanwhile, surged 3.8 points to reach 63.3%.
According to Yonhap, Realmeter linked the slump to a trio of controversies: backlash over Lee's recent Cabinet shake-up, contentious debate over whether to send military assets to the Strait of Hormuz, and lingering uncertainty surrounding real estate policy. The erosion in support was especially steep among younger voters, with approval among those aged 18 to 29 tumbling 10.2 percentage points.
Adding to the administration's troubles, gender equality minister nominee Yong Hye-in withdrew from consideration Sunday following criticism over alleged nepotism and controversy surrounding her intention to hold onto her parliamentary seat. Separately, justice minister nominee Kim Seung-won is facing accusations of illegally pressuring regulators to approve a COVID-19 treatment back in 2021.
The fallout extended to party politics as well: a companion Realmeter poll showed backing for the ruling Democratic Party sliding 5.7 points to 36.1%, while the opposition People Power Party gained 4.5 points to climb to 42.1%.
