TN: Heavy Rain, Strong Wind Forecast For Nilgiris, Coimbatore For Three Days

(MENAFN- IANS) Chennai, Sep 14 (IANS) The Regional Meteorological Centre in Tamil Nadu has forecast heavy rain in the hilly areas of the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts over the next three days, with strong winds also likely to affect the region.

The changing weather conditions have been attributed to a trough extending from southwest Madhya Pradesh to the Gulf of Mannar. Under its influence, rain activity is expected to intensify across parts of Tamil Nadu, particularly along the Western Ghats.

The weather department said isolated places in the hill regions of the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts could receive heavy rainfall accompanied by gusty winds from Monday to Wednesday.

Residents, tourists and motorists travelling through vulnerable mountain stretches have been advised to remain cautious.

Moderate rain accompanied by strong surface winds is also likely at isolated places in other Western Ghats districts on Monday and Tuesday. Similar conditions have been forecast for Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Erode, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Tiruchy, Ariyalur, Perambalur and Kallakurichi districts.

The rain may provide temporary relief from the prevailing heat in some areas. However, strong winds could affect road travel and damage weak structures, trees and standing crops in exposed locations.

People living in hilly and low-lying areas have been asked to monitor weather updates, particularly if heavy rain continues for prolonged periods. Motorists using ghat roads should exercise caution as rainfall could reduce visibility and make roads slippery.

Chennai is expected to experience generally cloudy conditions, with the possibility of light rain in parts of the city during the evening or night. No widespread heavy rainfall has been forecast for the capital at present.

Despite the likelihood of rain in several districts, daytime temperatures are likely to remain high in parts of interior Tamil Nadu. The weather department warned that the maximum temperature may rise by up to four degrees Celsius above normal at isolated places.

The combination of higher temperatures, humidity and intermittent rain could result in uncomfortable weather conditions. Members of the public have been advised to avoid prolonged exposure to the afternoon sun, remain adequately hydrated and take necessary precautions while travelling.

The authorities are expected to closely monitor weather conditions in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore hills, where intense spells of rainfall can occasionally trigger waterlogging, minor landslips and disruptions along mountain roads.
