Ukraine To Remain Key Focus For European Parliament MEP

(MENAFN- UkrinForm) French MEP Fabienne Keller of the Renew Europe group said this in a comment to an Ukrinform correspondent.

"Yes, Ukraine has been, is and will remain a very important issue for us. During this plenary week, there will be a debate on the current situation in Ukraine. The European Parliament is indeed monitoring it very regularly and very thoroughly," Keller said.

According to her, the European Union strongly supports Ukraine both militarily and economically.

"In particular, we adopted a EUR 90 billion package for two years to provide military support, enable Ukraine to purchase weapons and support the Ukrainian economy. The funds are being released in separate tranches. The European Parliament, by a large majority that is regularly reaffirmed in votes, supports Ukraine," the MEP said.

According to the European Parliament's official program, a separate debate on Ukraine will take place on Wednesday, September 16, in the afternoon. It is titled "Urgent need for EU support to Ukraine against Russia's escalation of its war of aggression."

The European Parliament's press service reported that Ukraine will also be one of the topics of the annual State of the European Union debate, which will begin on Wednesday at 09:00 with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Expected issues include support for Ukraine, strengthening the EU's security and defense, and increasing its energy independence.

Earlier on Tuesday, MEPs, together with EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas, will discuss the escalation of Russian hybrid attacks against member states, strengthening the EU's coordinated response, and protecting European security and democracy.

On Tuesday afternoon, the European Parliament will also consider three legislative acts from the Omnibus V package aimed at accelerating defense investment, simplifying the movement of defense products and procurement procedures within the EU, and increasing the European Union's ability to respond promptly to security threats. The documents will be put to a vote on Wednesday.
