May El-Toukhy's 'Woman Unknown' Screens At Venice Film Festival

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Danish director May el-Toukhy's film“Kvinde ukendt,” or“Woman Unknown,” is screening in competition at this year's Venice Film Festival. The World War II drama, a unique period piece, centers on a woman's body as a battleground for lingering suspicions about her past involvement with a Nazi officer following Denmark's liberation from Nazism. It has a running time of 124 minutes.

The film, which received a rating of 3.5/4 stars, explores a tale of survival during and after wartime, delving into historical detours often labeled as collaboration, but revealing a more intricate reality. It is the only film directed by a woman in this year's Venice competition, carrying the responsibility of representing a feminine perspective in challenging, confrontational ways.

Set with lush period detail and flowing Danish flags, the narrative conceals an invisible despondency, focusing on the protagonist, Marie ( Mathilde Arcel ). Marie works as a maid and nanny in an affluent household, but is engaged to marry its owner, Christian ( Carsten Bjørnlund ), who runs a successful glove factory. Marie carefully guards her past, which is unknown to Christian, who is much older than her.

The film's screenplay was written by Maren Louise Käehne and May el-Toukhy. In addition to Arcel and Bjørnlund, the cast includes Thorbjørn Hedegaard, Marina Bouras, Mia Plantin, Sofia Nolsøe, Flora Yde Sander, Mikael Birkkjær, and Joen Højerslev.
