Xi Urges BRICS to Keep Supply Chains 'Stable and Unimpeded'
(MENAFN) Chinese President Xi Jinping called Sunday on the expanded BRICS bloc and its partner countries to safeguard industrial and supply chains as "stable and unimpeded," as shipping disruptions ripple through the Strait of Hormuz amid the ongoing US-Iran war.
Speaking on the closing day of the two-day 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit in New Delhi, Xi said "Greater BRICS" should draw on its roots in emerging markets and its ties to the Global South, championing openness and cooperation for "mutual benefit and win-win outcomes." He reiterated the call to keep supply and industrial chains "stable and unimpeded," while working to foster more integrated markets — remarks reported by a state-run news agency.
Xi delivered the address at an open session titled "Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability: Shaping the Future for Inclusive Global Growth."
Global South as a 'Key Force' for Multipolarity
The Chinese leader described the Global South as a "key force driving the world toward multipolarity," urging member nations to defend multilateralism and the international rule of law. He said global rules must be written jointly by all nations, arguing that the logic of "might makes right" should have been abandoned long ago.
Xi called on Global South countries to "uphold authority and role of the UN," while also backing reforms aimed at making multilateral institutions more effective.
Calls for Financial and Trade Reform
Xi pressed for improvements to the international financial architecture and greater representation for developing nations, alongside World Trade Organization reform moving in the "right direction." He pledged that "China will further advance voluntary and unilateral opening-up," and voiced support for continued operation and growth of the New Development Bank, along with deeper cooperation across the Global South.
AI Governance and Industrial Cooperation
Xi said Global South nations should move faster to build a global AI governance framework grounded in broad consensus. He announced that China would take the lead in setting up an AI open-source zone for BRICS members and would push forward a shared digital industry cloud platform for the bloc.
The Chinese president also urged "greater BRICS" nations to modernize traditional industries, cultivate emerging sectors, and plan ahead for future industries, while building integrated markets to "lay a solid foundation for practical cooperation."
He floated a series of additional initiatives spanning science and technology talent development, smart manufacturing, digital industry growth, and trade and investment facilitation, alongside a push for "open and inclusive" AI development and a new BRICS alliance dedicated to engineer training. Xi also proposed establishing a special economic zones partnership among BRICS countries.
Looking ahead, Xi said China will host the BRICS Services Trade Forum in 2027, and confirmed Beijing is also set to host the bloc's annual leaders' summit next year.
