US Think Tank Tracks Muslim Americans, Organizations for Years
(MENAFN) A US right-wing think tank has spent roughly two decades building a database containing information on thousands of Muslim Americans and Muslim organizations, according to reports.
The Middle East Forum, a controversial organization established in 1994, compiled more than four million pieces of information. The material reportedly includes individuals’ names, social media accounts and tax records, along with details about mosques, schools, businesses and other organizations.
The database also reportedly contains information on individuals and groups regarded as supporters or allies of the Muslim community.
The organization acknowledged the existence of the archive after questions were raised about it and plans emerged to publish details about the database. It said scholars, journalists and other researchers would be able to request access to the material.
MEF Executive Director Gregg Roman said the organization had intended to make the initiative public later this year but welcomed its disclosure ahead of schedule.
The group describes its mission as defending Western values and drawing attention to what it calls the dangers of "lawful Islamism." Civil rights organizations, however, have accused the think tank of fueling Islamophobia and promoting misinformation about Muslims.
