Lula Leads Bolsonaro as Presidential Race Narrows
(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva continues to lead voting intentions ahead of October’s presidential election, although Sen. Flavio Bolsonaro is narrowing the gap, according to a recent poll.
Lula received 39% support for the first round, compared with 35% for Bolsonaro, according to the survey. The four-point difference represents a closer contest than previous polling has indicated, with the election approaching in less than a month.
A potential second-round matchup between the two candidates also showed a tight race. Lula led Bolsonaro 46% to 44%, a result that falls within the poll’s two-point margin of error and therefore amounts to a technical tie.
The survey was conducted from Sept. 8 to 10 among 2,002 voters across 125 municipalities in Brazil, with a margin of error of two percentage points.
Lula’s support is particularly strong among lower-income voters, women and Catholics, while Bolsonaro has greater backing among higher-income voters, men and evangelical voters, according to the findings.
The president also holds a substantial advantage in Brazil’s Northeast, where he leads Bolsonaro by 53% to 25%.
