Meloni Backs Confederal Model for European Union
(MENAFN) Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said Saturday that the European Union should move toward a confederal structure that allows member states to maintain significant sovereignty while improving cooperation on strategic matters.
"Together with the European Conservative family, I have always believed that the exact opposite is needed: a confederal European model, in which member states retain broad sovereignty but interact more effectively on matters of strategic importance," Meloni said, according to reports.
She argued that the EU’s current approach has failed to adequately respond to many of the major challenges facing Europe and acknowledged the need for changes in how the bloc functions.
However, Meloni rejected the idea that deeper political integration, ending unanimous decision-making or establishing a federal European system would provide the solution. She instead emphasized preserving the authority of individual nation-states.
"Therefore I disagree with Mario Draghi," Meloni said, referring to the former Italian prime minister and European Central Bank chief’s position that the EU needs to move toward a more federal structure to secure its future.
Meloni also reaffirmed her stance on Ukraine, saying she would not form an alliance with political groups that oppose support for Kyiv’s defense.
