Anthropic CEO Calls for Slower AI Development
(MENAFN) Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called on AI companies Saturday to slow the pace of artificial intelligence development, citing growing concerns about the potential risks posed by increasingly capable systems.
In an essay published Saturday, Amodei questioned whether humans will be able to retain control over AI models that have the ability to improve themselves. He also pointed to a recent case in which AI agents independently conducted cybersecurity attacks, describing it as another warning sign.
“We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” Amodei wrote. “Progress will still seem fast, and we must make wise use of the time we gain.”
“AI brings risks, and because it is such a powerful technology, these risks are serious… They include the risk of losing control of AI systems, misuse of AI for cyberattacks and bioterrorism, and serious economic disruption. A race to the bottom, spurred by commercial incentives, can make these risks more acute,” he added.
His comments came shortly after an Anthropic researcher announced his departure from the company, citing concerns that Anthropic and other AI developers were failing to approach the development of advanced systems responsibly.
