Türkiye Rejects US Extension of Greek Cypriot Arms Waiver
(MENAFN) Türkiye has criticized Washington’s decision to extend for another year the suspension of its arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration, warning that the move could further damage confidence between the two sides on Cyprus.
According to reports, the US has extended the measure allowing the arms embargo to remain lifted until Sept. 30, 2027.
“We share the views expressed in the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on this matter,” Türkiye said.
Ankara urged all parties to avoid actions that could further weaken trust on the island, particularly as it accused the Greek Cypriot side of “increasing pressure in every field” against Turkish Cypriots, whom Türkiye considers co-owners of Cyprus.
The Turkish government also warned that the Greek Cypriot Administration’s growing military buildup was having a negative impact on stability across the region.
“Motherland and Guarantor Türkiye, while defending the legitimate rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people, will also ensure their security under all circumstances,” it said.
Türkiye also pledged to “resolutely continue” supporting efforts for the TRNC "to attain its rightful place in the international community," according to the statement.
