Sisi Urges Deeper BRICS Cooperation to Build Economic Resilience
(MENAFN) Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi called Sunday for stronger cooperation among BRICS members and partner nations to forge more resilient economies as the global economy grapples with rapid change and mounting challenges.
Addressing an open session of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, Sisi said building economic resilience hinges on diversifying growth sources, reinforcing supply chains, investing in people and technology, and deepening cooperation across the Global South.
He singled out innovation and artificial intelligence as priority areas for Egypt, along with technology transfer and localization efforts aimed at helping developing nations capture more benefit from the ongoing technological shift.
Turning to sustainability, Sisi called for broader cooperation on clean and renewable energy, more efficient use of resources, and easier pathways for developing countries to access financing and technology.
He also pointed to Egypt's investments in ports, transport corridors, and logistics networks, describing the Suez Canal as the backbone of that system and one of the world's most vital international trade routes.
"Economic resilience cannot be separated from our ability to ensure food and energy security, maintain the smooth flow of trade and investment, and address supply-chain disruptions," he said.
Sisi pressed for expanded trade and investment flows among BRICS members and partners, along with joint projects designed to deepen economic integration and cushion the bloc against external shocks.
He further called for a stronger role for development finance institutions — particularly the New Development Bank — in funding infrastructure and development projects, and for widening developing countries' access to concessional financing.
The Egyptian leader said BRICS, drawing on the diversity of its membership and partners, is well positioned to build a practical model of Global South cooperation grounded in resilience, innovation, collaboration, and sustainability.
Sisi's remarks came on the closing day of the two-day summit in New Delhi. The now 11-member bloc includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
