Ramaphosa Urges Action Over Atrocities in Palestine, Sudan, Iran
(MENAFN) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa urged the international community on Saturday to hold those responsible for alleged atrocities in Palestine and Sudan accountable, while also condemning what he described as an “illegal war” against Iran. He warned that international law must not be enforced selectively.
“To give strength to the law, there must be accountability for atrocities, for the ongoing genocide against the people of Palestine, for the crimes committed against the people of the Sudan, and for the illegal war against Iran,” Ramaphosa said in an address to BRICS leaders in New Delhi.
“We must exert pressure and expose violations whenever and by whomever they are committed. International law cannot be applied selectively,” he said.
Ramaphosa argued that the same legal standards should apply to every country and that all populations should receive equal protection. He pointed to South Africa and other nations using international institutions, including the International Court of Justice, in efforts to pursue justice for Palestinians.
He also warned that repeated “overt violations” of the UN Charter and the use of military force to resolve disputes between countries are weakening the authority of the United Nations and threatening the future of the multilateral system.
According to Ramaphosa, international institutions and established rules are increasingly being disregarded and weakened, increasing the importance of BRICS as the global geopolitical landscape continues to change.
