Kremlin: Trilateral Ukraine Talks Expected 'In Foreseeable Future'
(MENAFN) The Kremlin anticipates a fresh round of trilateral negotiations on Ukraine will materialize soon, spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Sunday, pointing to recent diplomatic contacts in which the format was actively discussed.
Speaking to Russian media, Peskov said Moscow and Washington are aligned on the need for such a meeting. "As for the trilateral meeting, this has been discussed. We hope it will take place in the foreseeable future. In this regard, we are on the same page as (US envoy) Mr. (Jared) Kushner," he said.
While no fresh proposals are currently on the table, Peskov indicated that generating new options would be the very purpose of convening the talks. "As for whether there are any new proposals — there are none at the moment. But that is precisely what the trilateral meeting will be for -- to look for some new options," he noted.
Peskov Downplays Putin's War Warning as General Caution
Asked about President Vladimir Putin's earlier warning that stationing European troops in western Ukraine would amount to war with Russia, Peskov characterized the remark as a broad caution rather than a specific threat. "He spoke in general about the mistakes that are being made and could be made, which is prompting Europeans to think about some political alternative," he said.
Kaliningrad Security Response
Addressing calls from Poland to expand NATO military exercises near Russia's Kaliningrad exclave, Peskov said Moscow is responding with its own defensive steps. "The fact that NATO is gathering and conducting military activity there is clear. Therefore, we are taking all necessary measures to ensure the security of this important Russian region," he said.
Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski had earlier called for NATO to step up drills near the Kaliningrad border.
UAE Reaffirms Offer to Host Talks
Separately, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov said Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan told Putin the UAE remains willing to host Ukraine-related negotiations. "The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi confirmed that the Emirati side is ready to provide its venue, as it did before," Ushakov said.
Backdrop: Witkoff and Kushner's Moscow, Kyiv Visits
The Kremlin's comments follow a diplomatic push last week by US President Donald Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who traveled to both Moscow and Kyiv in an effort to reignite Ukraine peace negotiations.
The two envoys met with Putin in Moscow on Sept. 5, in talks the Kremlin described as "substantive, constructive and useful." They continued on to Kyiv the next day for discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Witkoff and Kushner called those talks "substantive" as well, voicing optimism that the peace process could regain momentum.
