Iran's IRGC Disputes Trump's Control Claim
(MENAFN) Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has pushed back hard against President Donald Trump's claim that the United States controls the Strait of Hormuz, cautioning that any American vessel that ventures near the strategic waterway will be met with force from Iranian forces.
"If that is the case, go ahead, bring one of your warships within 100 kilometers," Col. Ali Mohammadi, the IRGC Navy's deputy for political affairs, told a semi-official news agency on Saturday evening, directly addressing Trump's assertion.
Mohammadi said American commanders are well aware their ships would be confronted if they moved closer to the strait, claiming a comparable incident had already unfolded in recent days. He further alleged that major foreign militaries have kept their distance beyond the Gulf of Oman for months, insisting no US troops or military hardware are currently stationed in the Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, or the Gulf of Oman.
According to Mohammadi, the IRGC Navy maintains "complete" surveillance across the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf, and the Gulf of Oman. He said vessels sailing from Kuwait and Bahrain are being actively tracked and could face retaliation if they breach rules set by Tehran.
He went further still, claiming that US military installations in Gulf countries have effectively been rendered "non-operational," and asserted that Iranian forces had already carried out what he called preemptive strikes against US bases, warships, and vessels accused of violating Iran's rules.
The dispute comes as Trump has repeatedly claimed US dominance over the vital waterway amid Washington's ongoing conflict with Iran. Earlier this month, he said American forces had struck 28 Iranian boats and ships, declaring flatly: "We now control the Strait of Hormuz."
The rhetoric continued Wednesday, when Trump said the US was "winning" the war against Iran, again touted American control of the strait, and floated renaming it the "Trump Strait."
