Moscow Anticipates New Ukraine Talks as Diplomatic Efforts Continue
(MENAFN) Moscow expects another round of trilateral negotiations on the Ukraine conflict to be held in the foreseeable future, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Sunday, signaling that Russia remains open to further discussions involving the United States and Ukraine.
Peskov said the possibility of convening another three-way meeting had been raised during recent diplomatic contacts. He indicated that Moscow shares Washington’s expectation that the discussions could resume in the near future.
“As for the trilateral meeting, this has been discussed. We hope it will take place in the foreseeable future. In this regard, we are on the same page as (US envoy) Mr. (Jared) Kushner,” he said.
According to Peskov, no fresh proposals are currently under consideration, but he stressed that identifying potential new approaches would be one of the main objectives of a future trilateral meeting.
“As for whether there are any new proposals — there are none at the moment. But that is precisely what the trilateral meeting will be for -- to look for some new options,” he noted.
Peskov also addressed remarks previously made by Russian President Vladimir Putin concerning the possible deployment of European troops to western Ukraine. Putin had warned that such a move would constitute a direct confrontation with Russia. Peskov characterized the remarks as a broader warning intended to highlight the possible consequences of such decisions.
“He spoke in general about the mistakes that are being made and could be made, which is prompting Europeans to think about some political alternative,” he said.
The Kremlin spokesman also responded to calls from Poland for NATO to expand military exercises near Russia’s Kaliningrad exclave. He said Moscow was closely monitoring NATO’s military activity in the area and was taking steps to safeguard the security of the strategically important Russian territory.
“The fact that NATO is gathering and conducting military activity there is clear. Therefore, we are taking all necessary measures to ensure the security of this important Russian region,” he said.
Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorskiy had earlier called for NATO to increase the scale of its exercises near the border with the Kaliningrad region, adding another point of tension between Russia and NATO members.
Meanwhile, Kremlin foreign policy aide Yury Ushakov said the United Arab Emirates was prepared to host future negotiations on Ukraine. He said Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan had reaffirmed the UAE’s willingness to make its territory available for diplomatic meetings.
“The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi confirmed that the Emirati side is ready to provide its venue, as it did before,” he said.
