Ramaphosa Calls for "New Era" in South Africa-India Economic Ties
(MENAFN) South Africa and India stand at a pivotal moment to strengthen economic cooperation spanning investment, trade, industrial development and sustainable growth, President Cyril Ramaphosa said Saturday, pressing for a new chapter in bilateral economic relations at the South Africa-India Roundtable in New Delhi, held alongside the BRICS Summit.
"We are ready for a new era in economic relations between our two countries," Ramaphosa said, calling on private-sector players to translate policy dialogue into commercially viable projects and lasting investment.
The weekend summit in New Delhi has drawn the presidents of China, Russia and Iran, among other world leaders, unfolding against the backdrop of a US-Iran war now in its seventh month and a Russia-Ukraine conflict that has stretched beyond four years. China is set to assume the rotating BRICS presidency next year once India's term concludes.
Ramaphosa pointed to renewable energy, green hydrogen, critical minerals, infrastructure, agriculture and digital innovation as priority areas for joint effort, suggesting that South Africa's mineral wealth paired with India's manufacturing strength could drive development of electric vehicles, batteries and related products.
He also urged Indian firms to invest in South Africa's infrastructure pipeline, noting the country has earmarked 195 strategic integrated projects valued at over $100 billion — spanning transport networks, renewable energy plants, water systems and hospitals.
Pointing to the digital economy's promise, Ramaphosa cited the Cape Town site of Indian business services firm Atain, which is projected to grow its local workforce from 1,500 to more than 2,000 young South Africans. He further called for deeper collaboration among universities, research bodies, skills-development organizations and businesses.
"The strength of the partnership between our countries is not measured by the agreements we sign but by the impact we achieve," Ramaphosa said.
