Philippine Ferry Fire Death Toll Soars to 76, 13 Still Missing
(MENAFN) The number of confirmed deaths from a fire that engulfed a passenger ferry off Palawan province in the western Philippines has climbed to 76, with 13 people still unaccounted for, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Saturday.
In a statement, the PCG said crews had pulled 41 additional charred remains from the wreckage of the MV June Aster, pushing the confirmed death toll from 35 up to 76. Those remains are expected to be transported aboard the BRP Cape Engano on Sunday, the agency added.
The survivor count has held steady at 43, according to the Coast Guard.
Against the vessel's ticket manifest of 134 people, 13 remain missing, while two individuals listed on the manifest said they never actually boarded the ferry. Officials cautioned that these figures could still shift as recovery and identification efforts continue.
The MV June Aster was sailing from Manila to Coron, in Palawan, when the blaze broke out Wednesday night. Early reports had put the number aboard at 117 passengers and 17 crew members.
Five deaths were confirmed that same night, alongside the rescue of 43 passengers and crew. Authorities later recovered 30 additional bodies from the burned-out vessel once the fire was extinguished and a safety assessment had been carried out.
