Türkiye Slams US Move to Extend Cyprus Arms Embargo Lift
(MENAFN) Türkiye lashed out Saturday at Washington's decision to renew, for a further year, its suspension of the arms embargo on the Greek Cypriot Administration — cautioning that the move risks deepening mistrust on the divided island.
According to a statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry, the United States has pushed back the embargo-lifting waiver through Sept. 30, 2027.
The ministry aligned itself with Turkish Cypriot authorities on the issue, stating: "We share the views expressed in the statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) on this matter."
Ankara urged restraint on any measures that could further damage confidence between the island's two communities, arguing that the Greek Cypriot side is currently "increasing pressure in every field" against Turkish Cypriots — whom it identified as equal stakeholders in Cyprus.
The statement further charged that escalating military buildup by the Greek Cypriot side poses a threat to wider regional stability.
Reaffirming its protective role, the ministry declared: "Motherland and Guarantor Türkiye, while defending the legitimate rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people, will also ensure their security under all circumstances."
Ankara pledged to "resolutely continue" backing the TRNC's bid "to attain its rightful place in the international community."
