Saudi Alert Near Yemen Border Lifted After Brief Scare


(MENAFN) Saudi Arabia's Civil Defense issued alerts Saturday for the southwestern Khamis Mushait Governorate and Abha city in Aseer Province "to alert of a potential danger," before later confirming that "danger has passed" in both locations.

A statement posted on X by the civil defense authority nonetheless urged residents to "avoid gathering and filming."

The alert unfolded against a backdrop of rapidly escalating fighting in neighboring Yemen, where the Houthis have claimed control of strategic territory near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, including the districts of Hays and Al-Khawkhah in the western Al-Hudaydah province.

Combat between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis has likewise intensified across several fronts, most notably in the Taiz, Al-Jawf and Al-Bayda provinces, as airstrikes continue to target Houthi positions.

Yemen has remained mired in conflict since the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and several provinces in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene in 2015 in support of Yemen's internationally recognized government.
