Ramaphosa Demands Accountability for Gaza, Sudan, Iran at BRICS
(MENAFN) South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called Saturday for accountability over what he termed atrocities against the peoples of Palestine and Sudan, along with an "illegal war" against Iran, cautioning against the uneven enforcement of international law.
“To give strength to the law, there must be accountability for atrocities, for the ongoing genocide against the people of Palestine, for the crimes committed against the people of the Sudan, and for the illegal war against Iran,” Ramaphosa told the BRICS leaders' summit in New Delhi, India.
“We must exert pressure and expose violations whenever and by whomever they are committed. International law cannot be applied selectively,” he said.
Ramaphosa argued that identical standards must govern every state and identical protections must extend to every people, pointing to South Africa's and other nations' recourse to bodies like the International Court of Justice in pursuit of justice for Palestinians.
He cautioned that "overt violations" of the UN Charter, along with a growing tendency to settle disputes through war, are undermining both the relevance of the UN and the durability of the broader multilateral system.
The South African leader said multilateral institutions and rules are being sidelined and eroded with increasing frequency, a trend that he said makes BRICS all the more consequential in today's geopolitical climate.
“BRICS represents a world in which no nation needs to choose between East and West, North and South,” he said, describing the bloc as representative of a multipolar world united by a shared commitment to development, dignity and a fairer international order.
Ramaphosa also renewed South Africa's push for sweeping reform of the UN Security Council, noting that Africa — home to 54 UN member states and nearly a fifth of humanity — still has no permanent seat on the council.
“This is neither just nor sustainable,” he said, calling for a council that is “more representative, more accountable, more transparent, and effective.”
Ramaphosa said BRICS must remain a unified voice for reform, prove that multilateral cooperation can produce tangible outcomes, help build a fairer, development-driven system of global governance, and act as a bridge across geopolitical fault lines.
“In a fragmented world, dialogue matters more than consensus,” he added.
BRICS leaders convened in the Indian capital for the bloc's 18th summit, which is expected to culminate in the New Delhi Declaration — a framework intended to translate policy pledges into concrete action.
