Houthis Say Saudi Jets Hit Yemen 129 Times in 48 Hours
(MENAFN) Yemen's Houthi group alleged Saturday that "Saudi aircraft" struck seven Yemeni provinces 129 times over the previous two days, marking a sharp escalation in hostilities.
Houthi spokesman Yahya Saree said the strikes hit Taiz in the southwest, Marib in the east, Hodeidah in the west, Al-Jawf in the northeast, Saada in the north, Amran in the north, and Hajjah in the northwest, and pledged retaliation. Saudi officials have not yet responded to the accusations. Riyadh, however, has consistently maintained that it keeps no forces on Yemeni soil, saying its involvement is confined to backing the internationally recognized government's troops and securing the kingdom's border.
Earlier Saturday, Yemen's army said its fighter jets struck dozens of Houthi supply trucks. The Taiz Military Axis said in a statement that the convoy was hauling weapons, ammunition and missiles from Taiz province toward the Houthi-controlled capital, Sanaa.
The clashes come amid a rapidly shifting battlefield. The Houthis recently claimed seizure of several districts across the coastal provinces of Hodeidah and Taiz, along with a string of Red Sea islands, including Mayyun Island in the strategic Bab al-Mandab Strait. On the other side, Yemeni government forces reported gains in Al-Jawf province near the Saudi border, saying they were closing in on the provincial capital, Al-Hazm.
The renewed violence breaks a relative calm that had held since April 2022, following almost 12 years of war pitting government forces — backed by a Saudi-led coalition — against the Iran-aligned Houthis, who overran Sanaa and swaths of the country in 2014. Since the Gaza war erupted in late 2023, the Houthis have widened their regional footprint, striking Israel and targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea — and the latest surge in fighting has stoked fears that Yemen could slide back into all-out war.
