US Rallies Past Spain, Sets Up Final Rematch With France
(MENAFN) The United States overcame a resilient Spain side 76-66 on Saturday, pulling away in the fourth quarter of a tightly fought FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup semifinal in Berlin to reach the final once again.
Spain came out the stronger of the two sides, jumping to a 13-6 lead early, but the four-time defending champion Americans clawed back to take a 21-18 edge after the first quarter. The US held the advantage through the second period, taking a 39-36 lead into halftime.
Spain surged back after the break, wiping out a six-point deficit to tie the game at 58-58 heading into the final period. After Spain narrowed the gap to 62-60, the US answered with a decisive 8-0 run to open up a 70-60 cushion with 5:20 left on the clock, then closed out the game to seal a 10-point win and a spot in Sunday's final.
Breanna Stewart led all scorers for the US with 16 points and five rebounds, while Kahleah Copper added 13 and Jackie Young chipped in 12. Caitlin Clark managed just one point as the Americans leaned on balanced scoring to get past Spain. For Spain, Iyana Martin and Maria Conde each finished with 17 points.
The US will meet France in Sunday's championship game in Berlin, a rematch of the 2024 Olympic gold medal final. France advanced by defeating host nation Germany 86-64 to reach the final for the first time in program history.
Spain will play Germany in Sunday's third-place matchup.
