France Stun Host Germany, Reach First-Ever World Cup Final
(MENAFN) France downed host nation Germany 86-64 on Saturday to book their first-ever appearance in the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup final.
France came out fast in the semifinal, opening a 25-23 lead after the first quarter and stretching it to 45-38 by halftime. They kept extending the gap after the break, carrying a 64-50 cushion into the fourth quarter before closing out a commanding 22-point win.
Gabby Williams paced France with a game-high 22 points, with Janelle Salaun chipping in 14 and Marine Johannes adding 13. Valeriane Ayayi contributed 10 points and Leila Lacan scored four as France became the first team to punch its ticket to Sunday's final.
Nyara Sabally and Marie Guelich topped Germany's scoring with 12 points apiece, while Leonie Fiebich added nine.
The win also secures France's first Women's World Cup medal since claiming bronze back in 1953. They'll face the winner of Saturday's other semifinal, between Spain and the United States, in Sunday's final in Berlin.
Germany, despite the loss, still have a shot at history — they'll meet the loser of the US-Spain semifinal in Sunday's third-place game for a chance at a medal of their own.
