Houthis Strike Saudi Military Base, Threaten Deeper Attacks
(MENAFN) Yemen's Houthi movement announced early Sunday that it had launched a combined ballistic missile and drone assault on a military installation in southern Saudi Arabia.
Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree, in a statement posted to the US social media platform X, said the strikes hit weapons depots and command-and-control facilities at the Sharurah base. He described a large-scale barrage of missiles and drones and asserted that the targets were successfully struck.
According to Saree, the operation was retaliation for ongoing Saudi military action in Yemen, and he cautioned that further, more extensive strikes could follow deeper inside Saudi territory if the attacks persist.
Saudi officials have yet to respond to the Houthi claim.
Separately, Saudi Arabia's Civil Defense reported Saturday that a projectile struck the Al-Tuwal governorate in the kingdom's southwestern Jazan region, wounding two people. The agency said the strike also damaged a mosque along with several buildings and vehicles in the area.
The claims come as the front lines in Yemen's civil war have shifted sharply in recent days, with fighting between the internationally recognized government and Houthi forces intensifying since July after a prolonged lull.
The Houthis say they now hold the entirety of the western Al-Hudaydah province, following gains in Taiz province and the capture of the Red Sea port city of Mokha — an advance that has pushed the group's forces close to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical global shipping chokepoint.
Government troops have meanwhile pressed forward in the northern Al-Jawf province near the Saudi border, closing in on the provincial capital Al-Hazm. Fighting also continues on multiple fronts in Marib, Al-Bayda, and Al-Dhale provinces.
Yemen has been mired in war since the Houthis seized the capital Sanaa and surrounding provinces in 2014, prompting a Saudi-led coalition to intervene militarily in 2015 on behalf of the recognized government.
