Putin Calls for Greater Global South Representation at UN
(MENAFN) Russian President Vladimir Putin calls for changes to the UN Security Council to give greater representation to countries from Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Speaking at the BRICS summit in New Delhi, Putin says Russia considers the United Nations' central role in international affairs important and supports continued cooperation among BRICS members to make the organization more effective.
"Naturally, expanding the UN Security Council -- specifically by increasing representation for countries in Asia, Africa, and Latin America -- would contribute to this goal," Putin said.
Putin also highlights the need for long-awaited reforms to major global economic institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, World Bank and World Trade Organization. He argues that these bodies have struggled to keep pace with changing "political and economic realities."
According to Putin, the IMF, WTO and World Bank remain important platforms for dialogue between major economies. He calls for BRICS members to coordinate their positions more closely within these institutions.
Turning to the BRICS bloc, Putin points to the group's considerable intellectual and technological resources, describing these capabilities as one of its key strengths.
